Bike to Work Day 2026 marked the milestone of celebrating 25 years of inspiring commuters across the Washington metropolitan region to choose bicycling as a viable and healthy way to travel to work. Held on Friday, May 15, the event featured 107 “pit stops” throughout the District, Suburban Maryland, and Northern Virginia, where participants received free commemorative T-shirts, refreshments, swag, and opportunities to win raffle prizes.

For a quarter century, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ (COG) Commuter Connections program and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) have partnered to organize Bike to Work Day from a regional perspective, with a shared goal of introducing more commuters to bicycling and ultimately adopting the practice as a regular part of their work week.

“Bike to Work Day demonstrates how a fun, free, and community-focused event can inspire workers throughout the region to explore a sustainable way of commuting,” said Dan Sheehan, Director of Commuter Connections. “Choosing to bike to work supports personal health while providing a dependable and affordable transportation option.”

In 2026, the Bike to Work Day event continued its strong momentum, attracting 12,885 commuters to sign up; an uptick over the previous year’s registration.

Survey Highlights Demonstrate Lasting Impact

To evaluate Bike to Work Day’s effectiveness, Commuter Connections conducts a participant survey every three years. Last year, 1,625 bicyclists completed the survey, representing a 13.3 percent response rate. The findings highlight the event’s role in welcoming new bike commuters and boosting bike activity of existing riders. Eight percent of respondents reported bicycling to work for the first time, while 17 percent said they increased the frequency of their bike commuting during the months following. Taken together, one-quarter of respondents either began commuting by bike or rode more often following the event.

Participants Report High Satisfaction

Participants also expressed tremendous satisfaction with the Bike to Work Day experience. Nearly all respondents (99 percent) indicated they are somewhat or very likely to participate in a future Bike to Work Day event. Additionally, 98 percent said they would recommend the event to others.

The survey also shed light on employer-supported amenities that encourage bike commuting. The most reported workplace resources were bike racks (60 percent) and on-site showers (59 percent), followed by secure bicycle storage (48 percent). These bike-friendly amenities continue to play an important role in helping employees choose bicycling as a frequent commuting option.
