The 2026 goDMV Commuter Competition concluded on May 15 after six weeks of friendly competition between employers across the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. Designed to encourage sustainable transportation choices, the annual challenge rewards employees for choosing alternatives to driving alone, including transit, carpooling, vanpooling, bicycling, scootering, walking, and teleworking. The goDMV initiative also incorporates non-work trips using sustainable transportation, such as trips to grocery stores, medical appointments, entertainment destinations, etc.
This year, 1,224 participants logged more than 43,000 sustainable trips using Commuter Connections’ CommuterCash app, earning reward points redeemable for cash and also enjoying opportunities to win prizes, as they climbed the commuter leaderboard ranked by the number of logged trips of individual participants.
CommuterCash rewards points can be redeemed for cash via PayPal, Venmo, or Visa gift cards. Another available option is to apply rewards points toward SmarTrip or Capital Bikeshare credits. Virginia residents also have the option to apply CommuterCash rewards points toward E-ZPass.
A total of 37 employers participated in the 2026 goDMV Commuter Competition. Employees from each organization voluntarily used the CommuterCash app to log their sustainable trips over the six-week competition period. Employees logged trips for personal rewards, and their trips were also counted toward their employer’s collective trip total.
Employers were grouped by size and state with five employers named as 2026 goDMV Champions! To recognize their achievements, each Employer Champion received a trophy and a catered luncheon for participating employees.
The 2026 Employer Champions:
- District of Columbia: World Bank Group and Destination DC
- Virginia: Inova Health System and Northern Virginia Transportation Authority
- Maryland: Association of Zoos & Aquariums
Participants made a measurable impact during the six-week challenge, collectively saving more than 22,000 gallons of gasoline, reducing vehicle travel by nearly 400,000 miles, and saving an estimated $253,606 in commuting expenses. In addition to grand prizes valued at $500, participants enjoyed mini-challenges throughout the competition, with rewards ranging from restaurant gift cards to entertainment tickets.
Survey results showed that 48% of respondents changed their travel behavior during the competition, up from 45% the previous year, demonstrating the program’s growing influence on sustainable commuting habits.
Employers reported that the competition helped support organizational goals by reducing parking demand, advancing sustainability initiatives, strengthening workplace culture, and boosting employee engagement.
Congratulations to all participating employer teams for contributing to a cleaner, healthier, and more connected region. Employer registration for the third annual 2027 goDMV Commuter Competition opens in November 2026.
