What Is CommuterCash?

Earn cash while you commute! CommuterCash rewards commuters who use the app to find optimal commuting options. Use the app to explore carpooling, transit, biking and multimodal travel options. Log your commute trip in CommuterCash and earn points that can be redeemed for cash, gift cards, or transportation credits. Commuters traveling into the Washington, DC area or anywhere within Maryland can earn up to $10 after completing 10 trips – or save your points to earn $50. Rinse and repeat. It’s that simple! Up to $600 can be earned per calendar year. Stay tuned, we’ll publish download links soon!

How can CommuterCash help improve my commute?

CommuterCash is a comprehensive trip explorer that utilizes sophisticated technology to help commuters in the Washington, DC megaregion (which includes Maryland, Washington, DC, and northern/central Virginia). CommuterCash provides four distinct services to commuters:

1.  Earn Cash for a Smart Commute. Each commute trip that is tracked and logged with CommuterCash will earn you points. You’ll earn more points for trips that help reduce congestion and improve air quality – such as carpooling, taking transit, or biking. The points you earn can be accumulated and redeemed for $10, $25, or $50 in cash (via PayPal), Visa gift cards, WMATA SmarTrip credits, Capital Bikeshare credits and memberships, or E-ZPass Credits.  It’s basically like your standard credit card points program – except you don’t have to buy anything to earn rewards!

2.  Identify Multimodal Commute Options. Plan your trips with the best travel mode, departure time, and route that save time, cost, and fuel. Suggestions are based on traffic prediction and real-time data feeds.

3.  Avoid Traffic Delays. Utilizing sophisticated technology that can predict traffic jams, CommuterCash will advise smart routing to drivers. CommuterCash can help you avoid day-to-day congestion and traffic jams caused by traffic accidents, work zones, special events, and adverse weather conditions. You’ll receive alerts and alternative travel options in response to unusual incidents.

4.  Monitor Your Impact. Ever wonder about the environmental impact of your commute? CommuterCash helps you track and understand your emissions from driving and even has personalized tips to help you become a better eco-driver based on your driving habits. If you don’t drive, CommuterCash shows you how much you’ve earned in estimated fuel savings and how much pollution you’ve avoided generating.

FAQ

What types of trips are eligible for rewards?

Commute trips going to work from home (or vice versa) are eligible. Trips must occur on weekdays (Monday – Friday) during the morning peak commute times (6:30am – 9:30am) or during the afternoon peak commute times (4:00pm – 7:00pm). Only one morning and one evening trip will earn points per day.

How are point values assigned to my commute trips?

You may find your commute trips award anywhere between 10 to 100 points. The program exists to help users find alternative commuting options to driving alone, so you’ll likely find higher point values associated with modes such as ridesharing, transit, or biking/walking as opposed to lower point values awarded for driving alone.

Point values may change over time to reflect your commuting patterns. If you’ve demonstrated superior commute savviness, the app may make it more challenging for you to earn points. Take pride in knowing that you’ve accomplished what few in the region are capable of doing: Finding a smart, sustainable commute!

If I’m unemployed, can I still earn points?

No. The CommuterCash app is designed to help reduce peak period congestion during the morning and evening rush hours.

Can I earn points for telecommuting?

No. Only work commutes to a physical location within the peak commuting time frames are eligible for points.

Can I log a trip and earn points using an Electric Scooter?

Yes. While not specifically identified as a mode of travel within CommuterCash, scooter trips are recognized and categorized as bike trips within the application.

It’s been over 45 days since I redeemed points for a reward. What do I do?

Send an email to [email protected]. Please identify the email address associated with your account, the type of reward you requested, and the date you requested the reward.

What other benefits are available to me after registering for CommuterCash?

Upon registering for CommuterCash, you will also be eligible to leverage other commuter benefit programs under the Commuter Connections umbrella program. Feel free to take advantage of our other services, such as Guaranteed Ride Home, free ridematching, and more!
