Carpools with three or more people always travel toll-free on all Virginia Express Lanes when using an E-ZPass® Flex windshield transponder set to HOV ON, including the newly opened 2.5-mile Northern Extension of the 495 Beltway.
The Express Lanes extension improves reliability for commuters and reduces travel times between Virginia and Maryland and connects directly to both the George Washington Memorial Parkway and the Dulles Toll Road.
Commuters can ride the Fairfax Connector Express Bus Route 798, which travels along the expanded Express Lanes, providing weekday rush-hour service between Tysons, Virginia, and Bethesda, Maryland. Buses run every 20 minutes, stop at three Metro stations, and allow transfers to four different bus systems.
Drivers who currently commute alone can earn up to $320 through Commuter Connections—approximately $5 per day over a consecutive 90-day period—by starting or joining a new carpool. An additional $100 bonus is available from the Virginia Department of Transportation for carpools that use the new I-495 Northern Extension Express Lanes.
